York, Maine Drainage Improvements – Long Beach Outfall

The scope of this project consisted of four (4) individual projects totaling $1.3 million in drainage upgrades for the town of York, Maine and its downtown area of Short Sands Beach. The project had a very aggressive timeline with construction starting in January finishing by Memorial Day weekend. The projects were designed to improve the area’s drainage infrastructure and reduce flooding.

In January, Phoenix Precast Products began delivering its drainage structures:

  • 115 drainage structures ranging from 2′ to 6′ diameter
  • 3′ x 2′ box culvert
  • 8′ diameter outlet control structure
  • 5′ x 8′ custom box culvert outfall structure with galvanized front grate assembly

The custom outfall structure that was manufactured by Phoenix Precast Products consisted of seven custom-produced pieces to produce a final assembly. The outfall structure was set in place at the northern section of Long Beach Avenue and was the final piece of the infrastructure used to divert running water off the Nubble Peninsula down Long Beach Avenue. The pieces were designed to control the pick weights and to not exceed 8 tons each, which allowed the crane to maneuver the pieces into the slide rail trench box.

Key Points:

  • Heaviest piece weight 30,000 lbs.
  • Anti-flotation slabs with attachment hardware
  • Anti-flotation cradles with attachment hardware
  • 30-degree skewed end section
  • Galvanized grate assembly with stainless steel angles & hardware
  • Tight installation timeframe complete installation before high tide

** This project was a great example of how custom precast concrete products manufactured by Phoenix Precast Products can be produced and installed within any window of time that project constraints require.
